Real moms......

Once upon a time, not so long ago, Shelly tagged Jelly, who in turn tagged me
with the task of finishing the above sentence.

A photo is required to go with the sentence.

Please take a couple of minutes and have a look at what those two witty young moms/mums have written (click their names). I guarantee you’ll have a chuckle.

Here’s what I came up with:

Real moms are drill sergeants who read bedtime stories!

This photo was taken on Halloween in 1978

Andrew is the clown and Kylie is the fairy. I am dressed in my hubby's Marine Corps uniform. When I told him what I planned to write he suggested this photo :) Posted by Picasa
Thinking of the daily struggles moms face as they set limits and endeavor to steer their kids in the right direction brought to mind a funny little incident from my child-rearing years (funny in retrospect, that is.....athough I must admit my hubby and I had a good laugh about it at the time).
It happened during Andrew's less-than-angelic middle school years, when more often than I care to admit, I thought of him as a child only a mother could love...and sometimes this mother's feelings were not altogether loving.
Andrew, if you're reading this, I say those words with great affection :)

His class was studying Haiku, a form of Japanese poetry and this is approximately what he wrote:

My mother nags me
constantly, out of habit
She can't help herself

(I couldn't find the original paper, although I know I stored it in a safe place, not too long ago, for future reference!)

Now imagine how I felt knowing Andrew had handed this in to his teacher for marking?

But young mothers take heart! Early in his sophomore year (year 10), he actually became a pretty nice teenager :)

*Please note that we are "moms" here in the USA, while in Australia where I was born, we are "mums". Jelly thought I might be a bit confused, but I answer to both :) Just don't call me "The Old Nag" (please)!

Now it's my turn to tag 3 other moms.

I'm tagging Sandy, Horizon and Tuffenuf.
I hope they'll take up the challenge because I'm sure they'll come up with something creative!
Take your time ladies. I know all 3 of you are busy. If you don't have time or just don't want to do it, that's fine. No pressure whatsoever.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Very clever answer and great photo. Glad you didn't tag me I wouldn't have been able to compete.

The Mom vs Mum debate: the opposite of Kerri, I was born in the U.S. but moved to Australia 33 years ago. When my sons came along, I insisted on being called Mom, because I just didn't like the association of the word Mum with a brand of deodorant! Their teachers would occasionally "correct" my sons' references to their Mom, but I would always send back an explanation, which was accepted.

I'm laughing at Val and the use of Mum. She's right, it is (or was a deodorant in the US)
What an adorable photo of the 3 of you. I could trade some pretty good stories about teenaged boys with you sometime. I'm glad those days are behind me!!

Great photo! You do have to be a drill sargeant sometimes. Love the poem! Thanks for sharing a piece of your family history, very entertaining.

She sure is a fearsome looking mommy/mummy.

I've often wondered if the two words are pronounced differently, eg. mum = sum; mom = tom? Perhaps I won't have to wonder any longer.

You did a great job with that one Kerri. I love the picture - it's perfect.
I'm so glad those years are behind me. I agree - boys seem to go through those early teens with a little "difficulty", but they get quite human in just a few years. Just between you and me, I found the boys lots easier than my sweet girl. Much less "drama".
Have a great weekend!!

Kerri, this is brilliant!! I love the completed sentence, and the photo is hilarious.

It IS true - we have to be the disciplinarians as well as the entertainment committee. Being a mother is certainly a job requiring multi-tasking!!

Thanks for doing the meme :)

Your son's haiku is wonderful - you should have framed it! "Real moms are drill sergeants who read bedtime stories!" was perfect, but the photo quite startled me! [and not just because you look too much like Sean Penn when he was young.]

Kerri, once again we have one of those parallel universe situations: my 1982 Halloween costume was my father-in-law's Marine uniform, and I also wore a moustache. Instead of a fairy, however, we had an elf.

Maybe that is the costume I should wear the last week of school when my students wish vacation had already started. Great post.

Very funny story, Kerri.

How lucky you are to have such pretty photos from your children's childhood days, full of memories.

Very good Kerri and now I'll have to think long and hard on this one.
