Winter Comic Relief

Rupert the Red-tailed Bluejay

You know Duncan and Dudley
and Percy and Vincent,
Corbin and Clarence
and Donald and Crispin
But do you recall
the most famous bluejay of all?

Rupert the red-tailed bluejay
had a very shiny tail

and when the others saw it
it would make them feel quite pale.

All of the other bluejays
Rupert always chased away

he wouldn't ever let them
share the food on his seed tray!

Then one snowy winter's eve
Sheba came to say,

"Rupert, with your tail so bright
you will be my meal tonight!"

Then how his friends grew merry
as they shrieked and sang with glee,

"Rupert the red-tailed bluejay
you'll go down in history!"

Alernate warm fuzzy ending:

Then all his friends came shrieking
frightening Sheba right away

Rupert the red-tailed bluejay
lived to see another day.

Postscript:
From that day on Rupert became a much nicer bird
and happily shared the seed tray with his friends.
And Sheba is really just a sweet pussycat who never tries to catch birds (uhuh!)

Footnote:
This little bit of tomfoolery was inspired
(with apologies to Rudolph)
when I took the top photo in December and it came out, by chance, with a red Christmas light superimposed on the bluejay's tail. Most definitely a cue for a silly song, wouldn't you say? :)
The other photos had to have the red tail added.

Happy February everyone!

Hi Kerri, what a gleeful story you have written. It would be just right for you to right a childrens book. It is excellent and I felt a little sorry for the little Jay until it ended all well. Wonderful!

That started my morning with a chuckle. I'm a scifi fan and it looked like a blue jay with a light saber:)

Ha. Your inspirational photo is really very amazing. Truthfully all those blue jay photos are so cheery and pretty against the white snow. Even around here the cardinals are standing out like never before.

That was really clever, dear Kerri, and gave me a good chuckle as I delay the housework I should be doing right now. :-) God bless, dear girl... stay warm.

This was a very fun post! I'm glad Rupert decided to be an nicer bird. Sheba looks too nice to want a red tailed blue jay for dinner anyway :)

You really had me going there for awhile! Cute post, but I thought for sure you had caught photos of the world's only red-tail blue jay. My mouth dropped open. Thank you for the fun!

Love it, Kerri! Not only for the photos, the verse and your gift of fun, but the NAMES! Who else would have put Crispin, and Rupert and Clarence into rhyme?

Well, I am glad that Rupert straightened out. Nobody likes a bird bully. Good art work, Kerri.

Excellent story, Kerri! Loved it and Rupert's glowing tail. And Sheba's innocent face. Hope you're well out of the path of this big storm that's approaching.

You are so clever!!! I love the story/song and found myself singing it and wondering what was going to happen to Rupert! LOL
You are a great story teller Keri!
Thanks for sharing. I'll be smiling all night long.

2nd February is also the celtic festival of Imbolc; the Christian festival of Candlemas; and also my husband's birthday - so it always heralds the start of spring here in the UK. I do hope Rupert's story lifted other flagging winter feelings for all the readers!

Kerri, That was a treat and made me laugh...especially the warm and fuzzy ending. Even birds can change! I am so glad you got to see my Yowies! Aren't they wonderful and those creative Aussies! I ordered them about 8 yrs ago and FINALLY got to wear them. Hoping all is well with you up in the frozen north. gail

Kerri, you made me smile;-) I had seen this post and hadn't stopped to comment before. You know, when you're skipping through your google reader, or through Blotanical, and you look at them but don't stop to comment? Well, it's cute, and creative! Of course, I love your birds!! I've seen just 1 bluejay this winter...which is unusual here! I have up to 20 bluebirds at a time, however. I don't know where they come from and what's so great about my snowy Virginia yard! (speaking of which, I just noticed you have me down as being in W. Va.--it's Va.). Thank you! I'll see ya (hopefully) for bloom day. Jan

Kerri you made me smile and chuckle this morning!!! That was just so cute! I was afraid he had become dinner for the cat so am glad he wasn't! :o)

We've got a major mess on our hands here. Our lake house froze up, pipes burst and water has been flowing through it for weeks or even months. We just discovered it on Friday. I have posted pictures, you just won't believe it!

I know I'm late to comment, there never seems to be enough time now! I had a giggle at your little song, and as always it had the perfect images to match! I hope you are enjoying what is left of winter, I am longing for winter here - I desperately want to start making soups and stews! Take care xo
