Happy Thanksgiving!

Garden Meditations
by Max Coots

Let us give thanks for a bounty of people.

For children who are our second planting, and though they
grow like weeds and the wind too soon blows them away, may
they forgive us our cultivation and fondly remember where
their roots are.

Let us give thanks:

For generous friends...with hearts...and smiles as bright as their blossoms;
For feisty friends, as tart as apples;
For continuous friends, who, like scallions and cucumbers,
keep reminding us that we've had them;
For crotchety friends, sour as rhubarb and as indestructible;

For handsome friends, who are as gorgeous as eggplants and
as elegant as a row of corn, and the others, as plain as
potatoes and so good for you;
For funny friends, who are as silly as Brussels sprouts and
as amusing as Jerusalem artichokes;

And serious friends as unpretentious as cabbages, as subtle
as summer squash, as persistent as parsley, as delightful as
dill, as endless as zucchini and who, like parsnips, can be
counted on to see you through the winter;

For old friends, nodding like sunflowers in the evening-time,

and young friends coming on as fast as radishes;
For loving friends, who wind around us like tendrils and hold
us, despite our blights, wilts and witherings;
And finally, for those friends now gone, like gardens past
that have been harvested, but who fed us in their times that
we might have life thereafter.
For all these we give thanks.

Those are beautiful, I love them because it takes them so long to bloom, but when they finally show up, I can't stop admiring them. And today I am thankful our paths have crossed. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner with your family. xoxoxo

That's just beautiful Kerri. There truly are so many kinds of friends and each one appreciated. Your photos are SO pretty. I bought a Christmas cactus last Nov and it promptly lost all its flowers the moment I brought it home. I gave it to my Mom where it is flourishing. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. I hope you're having a great day.

No flowers for me either. I'm not surprised, the plant is quite neglected and desperately needs to be repotted.

Lovely post, Kerri! Happy Thnksgiving!

What a lovely poem! It sure sums it all up doesn't it?! The pictures of your flowers are gorgeous too. Hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving with all of your family.

I'm getting along very well with New Editor Blogger. I am able to put pictures in where I want, change their size with a click and a few other functions that I like. I do so miss spellcheck though and I keep hoping one of these days it will be working. Lots of people are complaining to Blogger so maybe they will get it fixed! I still want to touch bases with you at some point, can you load more then one photo at a time with Picassa??

My Christmas Cactus is showing some buds as well! Not full blooms like yours, but I hope to see them soon! It does get colder up in New York faster than it does down here in Nevada. Lovely blooms!

And a Happy Belated Thanksgiving to you!

Hi Kerri! Your Cacti are so pretty. The white one looks so pure and lovely!
I love the poem and need to borrow it to send to my gardening daughters.

Hi Kerri, my handsome as eggplant friend!

I remember Susan posting this poem - I loved it then, and still love it now. It even prompted me (after reading Susan's posting of it) to write a post about one of my 'rhubarby' friends, whom I love to bits.

Hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving Kerri, and please say a big hello to Ross.

That is such a cool poem - glad you passed it along for Thanksgiving, Kerri!

I noticed Mr Brown Thumb calls his plants "holiday cactus" rather that Thanksgiving or Christmas, because they bloom at different times in different years. I have four -two in full bloom and two slackers. Your zygos are beautiful - hope your Thanksgiving was beautiful, too!

Delightful post, Kerri. Thank you for your help with the voting. Your plants are beautiful. I think my holiday cactus needs re-potting. My grandmother told me of one she saw that was in a dishpan, the big, old fashioned metal serviceable kind that they really used. It was that large!

Beautiful poem, Kerri. Your November blooms are beautiful. I love the photos of the frost-edged leaves of the Euphorbia and Spirea. Beautiful!

Hi Kerri, Wow do you have a lot of lovelies blooming now. Is it my imagination or are cactus starting to blooming earlier every year?

I hope you had a wonderful holiday with your family. Sorry I didnt get here before Thursday.

Bet you are already marking new things in the seed catalogs that have been arriving in these last few weeks. I am for sure. You had a pretty little blue flower I wanted to try, but I can't rememeber the name. Some day, I am going to go back through your blog until I find it!

Catch you before Christmas!

PS-- no snow here in November at all.

Your "Christmas" cacti are lovely! I wish mine would do well. They don't like it here at this house. At my old house in Michigan they bloomed for me every year. Here, they just sit and look at me. Weird. It's getting colder, but the mild weather is still allowing me flowers in December. I love it! I have roses, lamium, alyssum, yarrow and lots of pansies, plus a few strays.

I especially love the bit about children. Kind of what I need to hear these days.

Happy Advent!

That is a true poem!!! Thanks for sharing it with us! I have not seen a white cactus, but I do have a hot pink one! My neighbor has a red one which I would like to get a snip of. I hope that you and yours had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I'm a little late, but things have been crazy here. I wish you a Merry Holiday Season in case I'm late again!
